WORLD HEARING DAY 2025 AT YMCH

Every year globally on March 3 rd is celebrated as World hearing day. This year World health organization (WHO) theme was "Changing mindset: Empower yourself to make ear and hearing care reality for all".On this occasion of World Hearing day, Yenepoya(Deemed to be University), Department of ENT and Audiology and Speech and Language Pathology conducted an awareness programme for the public on 3 rd March 2025. The programme was chaired by Dr Gangadhara Somayaji, Registrar and Professor of ENT. Dr. Moosabba, Principal, Dr. Abhay Nirgude, Deanand Dr. Habib Rahman, Medical Superitendent, Yenepoya Medical College attended the programme. Dr. Amrutha P, Senior Resident of ENT, introduced the audience about the importance of hearing, being one of the first and most important special senses and its relevance. Dr Vikram, Dr. Jafna from department of ENT and Miss Hanafrom department of Audiology educated the audience on prevention of hearing loss, early detection and timely intervention. In children the importance of hearing and its role on development of speech and brain development was also emphasized. The Impact of hearing loss in children and teenagers can lead into emotional and social disabilities. While in elderly hearing loss can lead to frustration, anger, embarrassment, social phobia, loneliness and rejection. Although hearing loss is seen in all age groups but in newborns and kids it can affect the maturity of brain and speech impairment. It was also discussed about the cochlear implant surgery and various schemes for children's born deaf. Yenepoya hospital has been empanelled for cochlear implant scheme under SAST(Govt of Karnataka).On this occasion Yenepoya Medical College Hospital Deralakatte is conducting hearing screening camp from 1 st April to 30 th April 2025, were the needy can utilize the services for decreased hearing or ear complaints for free or discounted rates. This awareness programme was organized by head of department of ENT Dr Sai Manohar and head of the department of Audiology and speech and language pathology Mrs. Shwetha Prabhu.
