DEPARTMENT OF LINGUISTIC STUDIES

The Department of Linguistic Studies offers courses in English, Kannada and Hindi as electives to the First Year students of BBA, B. Com, BCA, B.Sc. and BA programs in both the semesters. Reading materials prescribed as texts reflect a variety of themes related to global and local issues of the 21st century. It also focuses on the functional aspects of language as a medium of communication in everyday contexts of business, trade, media, industry and telecommunication. The department trains students who are comparatively weak in English and also conducts competitions like debate, quiz, essay writing and extension activities for the students. Multi-Interdisciplinary Elective (ME) courses in German, French, Korean, Beary, Communicative Tulu, Kannada Drama, Gender Studies, European Drama and Yakshagana are offered to students in the First, Second and Third semester thereby enhancing their creativity and skill. There are adequate number of qualified and competent faculty members in the department who are committed to the academic and overall development of the student community.

The Objectives of the AEC courses are to equip learners with the ability to read and write with understanding, communicate effectively and to make them use language with ease in different situations. The courses are designed to promote students’ language development through reading, writing, speaking and listening. Through the ME courses, students can benefit from exposure to arts and culture in the areas of critical thinking and problem-solving.

Learning a language, opens doors to a range of job opportunities and are considered essential for career advancement. It also aids to improve problem-solving skills, creativity, cognitive ability and chances for career growth and advancement. Being proficient in a local and a global language increases cultural sensitivity and awareness, making one a more effective communicator in diverse environments. Students can take up competitive examinations, state and central government jobs. Job opportunities in content writing, editing, customer service, tour guides, technical support etc. are available where English proficiency is essential for communicating with clients worldwide. Arts and culture education contributes to the development of intellectual and creative skills, as well as abilities in a particular art, for future professionals in the field.
